Hair transplantation

Aging, hormonal changes, and genetics all contribute to hair loss. It can also be caused by burns, trauma, or illness. There is practically no way to affect loss of hair or the age when balding starts to become visible. The only secure method how to eliminate balding areas is transplantation of hair from those areas where hair do not fall out - from the back of the head and above the ears.

The procedure

The scalp is a tissue composed of skin and hair follicles. The surgery rests in removing small parts of the scalp from the donor area and transferring them to the area where hair is desired. Those parts of the scalp are cut into tiny bits of skin containing about 4 hair follicles - grafts. In the recipient areas very tiny holes are created in the skin where the grafts are inserted. In one session, several hundred grafts are transposed. The surgery takes several hours depending on the size of the balding area and the number of grafts. It is done under local anesthesia.

The surgery is usually tolerated well and it is remarkably safe. The newly inserted hair follicles need to be covered until the transplanted skin bits are healed. About six weeks after the transplant, the transplanted hair begins to fall out. After about three months, new hair begins to grow from the transplanted follicles at about the same rate it did in its original position. Within one to three months the spaces between the new implants can be filled in with new grafts - two or three sessions are usually needed to achieve greater density of the new hair. The number of sessions depends on client's desire and preferences.

The result is highly visible. Balding is gone. Hair replacement can give a look of full hair. Transplanted hair will always look thinner compared to the approximately 100,000 hair follicles that typically grow on a head. The transplanted hair will not fall out because the follicles come from those sites where hair remains - that is why hair transplantation works.
